An Introduction and Discussion of Starbucks Coffee Company

Due to the dynamic and competitive nature of today’s business, companies are at times pushed into unethical behavior.  However, some companies still manage to carry out their business professionally and above all adhere to ethical behavior (Salemi, 2003).  In ethical behavior, businesses desist from cutting illegal deals or breaking the law to make more profits.  Companies that observe ethical behavior not only just think about profits but also think about the effects of their actions to other companies, customers and the environment as well.  Thesis statement?[PH1]

Overview of company?[PH2]

Starbucks Coffee Company is one of the world’s leading coffee roasting companies since 1971.  The coffee world is very corrupt and full of black market dealings; nevertheless, Starbucks has managed to commit itself to ethically sourcing and roasting the highest level of quality coffee in the world (Adriana 2003)[PH3] .  It observes integrity in its coffee dealing –especially during the world coffee auctioning conferences where other companies circumvent the set rules. [PH4]  Starbucks is compliant to the business and ethics standards as this helps it to protect the culture and the reputation of the company.  The company treats its employees with dignity and respect as compared to other companies that are profit driven [PH5] (Harun 2008). The company also does its purchases from suppliers through legal channels[PH6] .  Being ethically compliant has enabled the company to connect emotionally with its customers[PH7] .  Starbucks believes it is important to help care for our planet, and they encourage and work with others to do the same.  As a company that relies on an agricultural product with the potential to be impacted by changes in climate, Starbucks is committed to reduce its operating costs and increase shareholder value through energy and water efficiency,[PH8]  and believes they should reflect the values of their customers and their partners, as they believe it simply makes good business sense.

My research was to establish the businesses that adhere to the legal requirements in their dealings in both local and global arena. I relied on interviews and legal documents possessed by the business. The feedback of customers was integrated in determining which businesses had ethics and those who were self centered on making profit. The results can be interpreted in the sense that those who were criticized seemed not to observe ethical practices and vice versa. [PH9]

Summary of Interview Starbucks Manager on CSR.

Jarrid Baldwin, corporate affairs head at Starbucks, has ten years experience in corporate management having worked with Proctor and Gamble in various capacities across three continents. In 2001, he joined McDonald’s as the chief financial officer and spearheaded the company to massive cost cutting strategy during which he was honored with several awards before joining Starbucks. He is an alumni of the University of Miami and holds a Masters of Arts in Business Administration.

His becoming part o[PH10] f the company was important as it is during his tenure that the company started engaging in CSR strategy and set the level for others. In addition, his interview and speech were important since he has been instrumental in rebranding the company and removing the negative connotations that is associated with the company in coffee growing countries. He was also instrumental in ensuring the company was ISO certified and that achievement that had eluded Starbucks for several years.

Altogether, in his speech, Mr. Baldwin pointed out that Starbucks runs a business by responsibility and conducting itself in the methods which require to giving trust and respect to its customers and neighbors. In this way, it calls “shared planet” which means Starbucks emphasizes on ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship and community involvement. Moreover under the company’s operation, it also believes supporting the good workplace for partners or staff encouraging ethical business practices and maintaining legal compliance, corporate governance and also public policy (Sebhatu, 2012).[PH11]

During his interview, Mr. Baldwin indicated that in terms of CSR, Starbucks has a good governance structure, a good ethical conduct and social responsibility is the core strategy to their way of running business.  Additionally, I learned that Starbucks also focuses on maintaining the relationship between stakeholders and their company since they valued their customers, suppliers and neighbors. Altogether, the main point that Mr. Baldwin honed in on was that Starbucks’ CSR strategy was to conduct its business in a way that is environmental friendly, socially and economically beneficial to the community.  Hence, one of many major reasons they have engaged in various CSR projects.

In conclusion, I learned that attracting and retaining its partners (employees) as well as generating customer loyalty, reducing operating costs, strengthening their supply chain and licenses to operate, are all of the key elements that has made Starbucks a very successful and prosperous company.[PH12]

The Interview with Mr. Baldwin

The interview was conducted with the aim of establishing the operations of the company, the social responsibility to the community and the ethical practices of the business. The variables included the market volume, the sales figures and the awards of recognition that the company has received during its operation.

Appendix A

Furniture to Go, Inc.

Susan Kurczak, owner of Furniture to Go, Inc., is discouraged with her salespeople and is thinking about hiring some new individuals. Kurczak has been running Furniture to Go, Inc. for 10 years, and has slowly built the sales to $3.5 million a year. Her store is located on the outskirts of a growing city of 275,000. The city is highly industrial with many factories, and as a result, Kurczak’s target market primarily consists of blue-collar workers. She carries a line of higher-priced furniture, but emphasizes budget combinations and easy credit terms.

Kurczak is concerned that she may have reached the limit of her sales growth. Her sales have not increased during the last 2 years even though total furniture sales have been increasing in the city as new people move into the city. Her local cable television spots and newspaper advertising seem to attract her target customers, but many of these people come in, look around, and leave without returning. Some of them do return to make a purchase, but most do not. She thinks her product selections are suitable for her target market, but she is concerned that her salespeople are not closing sales with potential customers. She has discussed this matter with her 10 salespeople many times. Her salespeople think they should treat customers the way they personally would want to be treated. They argue that their role is to answer questions and be helpful when asked, not make suggestions, or help customers make decisions. They think this would be too pushy and overbearing.

Kurczak says that customers interpret the salespeople’s behavior as indifference. She has tried to convince her salespeople that customers must be treated on an individual basis and that some customers need more help in looking and deciding than others. Moreover, Kurczak is convinced that some customers would appreciate more help and suggestions than the salespeople themselves might want. To support her views, she showed her staff data from a study of furniture store customers that she found on the Internet from a furniture trade association. She explained the differences in demographic groups and pointed out that her store was trying to aim at specific people. She argued that the salespeople should cater to the needs and attitudes of the customers, and think less about how they would like to be treated. In this way, customers would be inclined to return. Further, Kurczak announced that she is considering changing the sales compensation plan or hiring new salespeople if the present sales representatives do not improve in sales. Currently, the sales representatives are paid $22,000 per year plus a 5% commission on sales.
