Assignment 1: Boot Camps
Boot camps are sanctions based on shock incarceration grounded in military techniques. The basic idea behind boot camps is that its forced labor and “tough-love” components will instill a sense of discipline and self-motivation in the juveniles that will carry on past the initial boot camp experience.
Despite their popularity, there is little evidence to show that boot camps are effective. Some studies also suggest that boot camps may cause more harm than good.
in a minimum of 250 words, post to the Discussion Area your response to the following points.
- Provide two examples of boot camp programs.
- Based on of your research, explain whether these programs are effective. Identify their strengths and weaknesses.
- Explain whether you think boot camps address the underlying issues facing delinquent youth. Provide reasons for your answer. Be sure to document your sources.
Note: Make sure you fully understand how boot camps differ from other forms of juvenile confinement (such as ranches, training schools, and detention centers). Understanding these differences is crucial to being able to form a reasonable argument pertaining to the effectiveness of boot camps.
