Students will be required to write a 1500 word (it can be longer but not shorter), double-spaced research essay on any ONE of the topics listed in the section below.

IMPORTANT: You MUST save your essays as WORD (.doc file) or RICH TEXT FILE (.rtf file) documents! Otherwise, I probably won’t be able to open your essay! I can’t grade an essay that I can’t open!

Your essay should be:

A minimum of 1500 words in length (it can be longer, but NOT shorter).

Based on any ONE of the approved topics listed below.

Written ENTIRELY in your OWN words (no plagiarism, in other words). You may use a few brief quotes, but be careful to use quotation marks (” “) and to keep quotes relevant and to a minimum (no more than 1 or 2 brief quotes per page). Quoted material will NOT count towards the word limit!

Neat and clearly written. I do not require any particular “style” (MLA, APA, Turabian, etc…), but I do expect the essay to be neat and clear. Please be sure to proofread your essay before submitting!

You may use the internet, books, periodicals, etc in researching your essay topic. Be sure to use at least 3 sources and be sure to put everything into your own words when writing the essay! List all sources used at the end of your essay.

Please do not use images (pictures, maps, graphs, etc.) in your essay! They often make it more difficult to upload your file.

Written using standard #12 fonts, double spaced, 1-inch margins, etc..

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as copying someone else’s work (from the internet, books, magazines, etc) and passing it off as your own (without putting it in quotes, or otherwise noting it is from another author).

It is also NOT acceptable to “recycle” your own essays that you may have written for another class.

To put it simply: Your essay must be an original work, written entirely in your own words, for this class.

PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If an essay is found to have ANY plagiarized material in it, the student will be DROPPED FROM THE CLASS WITH AN “F”. There will be NO NEGOTIATIONS and NO SECOND CHANCES.

It is, of course, perfectly acceptable to use the information you get from the internet, books, etc, just put it into your own words and use direct quotes sparingly (to highlight points you are trying to make, for example).

Grading Rubric

The research essays will be graded using the following rubric:

90-100: An outstanding essay which covers the chosen topic in a clear, thoughful, detailed manner and which has zero or only a very few minor grammar errors.

80-89: An excellent paper which covers the chosen topic in a clear, thoughtful, detailed manner but may be lacking in certain content areas or suffering from some more noticeable grammar problems.

70-79: An average paper which covers its topic, but not in a clear, thoughtful, or detailed enough manner or one which exhibits flawed grammar consistently throughout the paper.

60-69: A poor paper which does not cover the topic well and/or suffers from numerous major grammar problems.

0-59: A very poor paper which fails to cover the topic in any detail and/or is basically unreadable due to numerous major grammar flaws throughout the paper.
